Reflection

John the Baptist speaks truth to power and pays with his life. Herod "liked to listen to him" but was trapped by his own pride and a rash promise. Herodias, nursing a grudge, seizes her opportunity. John dies for telling the truth about an unlawful marriage.

Today we honor Paul Miki and his companions - 26 martyrs crucified in Japan in 1597. From the cross, Paul preached: "The only reason for my being killed is that I have taught the doctrine of Christ. I thank God it is for this reason I die."

For families: Are we willing to speak truth even when it costs us? Do we teach our children that following Christ may require sacrifice?

Universal Prayer for the Domestic Church

As a family, pray together:

  • Through the intercession of the Japanese martyrs: For courage to witness to Christ, whatever the cost. Lord, hear our prayer.

  • For persecuted Christians: Strengthen those who suffer for their faith today. Lord, hear our prayer.

  • For integrity: Help us to speak truth and keep our promises. Lord, hear our prayer.

Faith in Action

Paul Miki preached from the cross. His final witness was powerful because his whole life had prepared him for it.

  • Learn about the 26 martyrs of Japan and share their story with your children
  • Pray for Christians persecuted today
  • Examine: Are there truths we avoid speaking because of fear?

A Note for Parents

Herod made a foolish promise and kept it to save face. Teach your children to be careful with their words - and that it's better to break a sinful promise than to keep it.

“The only reason for my being killed is that I have taught the doctrine of Christ.”

— St. Paul Miki
